World Book Day 2022

World Book Day  is a day set aside every year to celebrate reading for pleasure, authors and illustrators. This year marks its 25th anniversary and takes place this Thursday, 3rd March!

We will be giving out the £1 World Book Day book tokens via form tutors for you to exchange either for a £1 World Book Day book of your choice OR get £1 off any book costing £2.99 or more at all participating bookshops and supermarkets.


This year we are extremely excited to have the award-winning author Patrice
Lawrence
coming in for an author visit and book signing with our Year 9 and 10 students!  Her books, which include Orangeboy, Eight Pieces of Silva and Splinters of Sunshine, are available to borrow from the EPHS Libraries.

Other activities including the ever popular ‘Match the Teacher to the Book’ competition and there will be an opportunity to Drop Everything and Read at some point during the day.

There are some great competitions to enter on the World Book Day website too and some brilliant WBD reading lists, including ‘The Power List’ and the ‘Top 25 Books for Teens’.  Check out the lists on OLIVER and borrow the books from your EPHS Libraries.

Children's Book Awards 2022

Below is a round up of some of the long and short lists of some of our favourite children's and YA book awards.  The Diverse Book Awards and Bookseller YA Book Prize are open for 2022 submissions now.  Watch this space for the announcement of the winners later in the year!  

Yoto Carnegie Greenaway Awards 2022

There are so many brilliant books on the Yoto Carnegie & Greenaway (CKG) Awards longlist, many of which we have in the EPHS Libraries. It’s going to be very difficult for the judges to whittle it down to just 8 books for the shortlist, to be announced on 18th March.

CILIP Carnegie Medal Longlist 2022/ 

EPHS students will be shadowing the Carnegie Award again this year - we can’t wait!

Waterstones Children's Book Awards

The Waterstones Children’s Book Prize shortlist 2022 has been announced. The award is split into three categories - illustrated books, books for younger and books for older readers. As usual, there are a great selection of books on the lists including The Crossing by Manjeet Mann, winner of the Costa Children’s Book Award 2021

The Crossing has also been long listed for this year’s CKG awards along side books by EPHS favourites Patrice Lawrence for Rat and Alex Wheatle for Cane Warriors.

Blue Peter Book Awards

The Blue Peter Book Awards shortlist 2022 has been announced.  Included on the list are Helen Rutter's The Boy Who Made Everyone Laugh and Good News by Rashmi Sirdeshpande - both books are available to borrow now from the Lower Library!




The Lollies Laugh Out Loud Book Awards 2022

The winners of the Lollies have been announced.  The Super Miraculous Journey of Freddie Yates by Jenny Pearson and Rob Biddulph has won was voted Best Laugh Out Loud Book for 9-13-year-olds.  This brilliant book is available to borrow from the Lower Library as well as other books by Jenny Pearson.

Children's Mental Health Week 2022

This week is Children's Mental Health Week and this year's theme is Growth Stories.  The Libraries have a great selection of fiction and non-fiction books to help you understand you and support you through the different changes that are happening in your life. 

Ms Peters has also created a spinner of well being books for you browse and borrow in the Lower Library. Why not have a look when you are next in the Library?  

You may also like to explore the empathy collections for secondary - these are all books that allow you to understand other people and yourself better by reading about their experiences.

LGBT+ History Month 2022

February is LGBT+ history month so to celebrate we are highlighting some of the great LGBTQ+ books we have in the library. 

LGBT+ history month is all about learning the history of the movement and promoting equality so be sure to check out some of our great non-fiction about queer history as well as enjoying our wide range of fiction featuring LGBTQ+ characters. 

We also have a great selection of classic books by queer icons like Oscar Wilde and Audre Lorde who are must read authors when remembering our rich history.  Check out the Library Insta (@ephs_library) for more recommendations!

Harry Potter Book Night 2022

Tonight is Harry Potter Book Night, an opportunity to celebrate the phenomenal series of books by J K Rowling.  This year's theme is 'magical journeys'.

Visit the Bloomsbury website for free fun activities including the Harry Potter name generator, Harry Potter trivia quiz and book trailer videos, illustrator interviews and DIY videos.  

2022 marks the 25th Anniversary of the Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling.  The first book in the series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, was first published on 26th June 1997.  The Harry Potter books have been translated into over 80 languages and if all the books from the series ever sold were placed end to end they would go over 16 times round the equator.  To read other fun facts about Harry Potter click here

The Harry Potter series are available to borrow from the EPHS Libraries and we have just bought a brand new set for the Upper Library!  Happy reading!

Bishop Stortford College Online Festival of Literature

The Bishop Stortford College online Festival of Literature begins this Friday, 4th February and runs until next Friday 11th February

There are a great selection of award-winning authors taking part, including Robert Muchamore, author of the Cherub and Robin Hood series; A.M. Dassu, author of Boy, Everywhere; Emily Haworth-booth, author and illustrator of Protest!: How People Came Together to Change the World. EPHS favourite Alex Wheatle and contributor to the Small Axe series on BBC One, author of Cane Warriors and The Humiliations of Welton Blake and David Olusoga, Historian and author of Black and British A Short, Essential History.  To see the full programme of events click here.


EPHS students will have the opportunity to view these events during their English and History lessons, either live or as a watch again event at a later time.

Books by all these amazing authors are available to borrow from the EPHS Libraries.
